  • Stitched Shibori is a Japanese art form of hand stitching using a straight stitch through a single or double layer of fabric.

Sliding the stitches tightly tied together produces tiny folds that change the flow of the indigo pigment dye creating mirrored or freeform designs. This stitching technique is easy to learn plus convenient to enjoy anytime----while watching TV, waiting, as a meditation, or on breaks.

Session 1----Stitch FIRST! ----Friday, September 13 from 5-8pm
    Stitched Shibori Starts!
The instructors for Stitched Shibori Part 1, Ruth Chandler and Gwen Rodriguez, will provide shibori stitching fundamentals of cultural significance, needle and thread use, the application of specific knots for anchoring and tying up stitches, and the basics of the indigo pigment dyeing process. Students will start with multiple options for planning designs on fabric, tracing chosen designs with cardboard templates, and begin hand sewing with the straight stitch. This evening’s session will conclude with final questions and taking projects home to complete self-paced to bring back for Session 2, October 12.

Please bring for this Session 1:
    +pen/notebook
    +12-inch ruler
    +water/beverage
    +snack
    +readers/cheaters

Session 2----REVEAL DAY! ----Saturday, October 12 from 9am-4pm
    Indigo Day!
After four weeks to complete projects, students will immerse their stitched creations into vats of indigo pigment. The lovely blue indigo moves into the fabric’s fibers with a defined softness creating a symbiotic relationship between----the student----the thread----the fabric----the pigment!

As the anticipation builds, it will be hard to contain the excitement once the many stitched projects are dyed, cleaned, and the stitches removed. It’s show and tell time!
Please bring for this Session 2:
    +finished projects
    +pen/notebook
    +readers/cheaters
    +bring a lunch/snack
    +water/beverage
    +wear old clothes or apron

Upon completion of the two sessions, students will have multiple Stitched Shibori samples for use in small projects, embellishing clothes, creative mending, and cultural information and ideas to expand upon.

This is a “no experience required” experience!
    Cost: $100
Supply kit: $20 payable upon arrival with Cash to instructor at Session 1
